I met a couple of friends to train in woodland which tested the dogs because there was alot of felled trees and dense brambles. We used cold game and concentrated on blinds and double marks at varying distances, and the felled trees proved a good challenge. At times the trees blocked the dogs path, so they had to work out for themselves how to manouver round, over or under the trees. Must admit I really enjoyed the training session, I like to challenge the dogs rather than just do the run of the mill stuff. Forgot to mention that it was getting quite dark with the training session starting at 6 - finishing at 8 pm. I find that training at this time makes the dogs get their noses down to hunt the ground, rather than just a plain simple mark.
Test 1 - a double mark with the game been thrown fairly close together. The dog to go for the designated dummy first, then sent again for the other.
Test 2 - a seen and a blind - again fairly close together, with the blind to be picked first then the seen. This retrieve was in dence brambles and logs and at a distance of around 200 yards.
Test 3 - a really long retrieve, through the woods, the dogs been out of sight from the handler so basically they had to use their heads and their noses.
Test 4 - the dogs were sent into an area marked out with sticks, to hold and hunt the area, but they were no birds down. When the handler was happy that the dog had worked and hunted the area well enough, then a bird was dropped un-noticed by someone, so that the dog still had a successful retrieve.

It was a good training session and by the time we were coming back out of the woods and making our way to the cars, it was pitch black. We must have looked like a right shady bunch of characters. All feeling our way round the trees and dropping down holes and ditches. Anyone watching must have thought we were a right set of drunks getting upto mischief in the woods. Ahhhgh well - never mind.

On the 4th & 5th of September 2011 Swaine Julianae of Peniglen (Boss) & Ian was selected to run for the URC Lincs Area at Chatsworth in the Working Test Team Event held at Chatsworth House Estate.

We ran a training group last night with 7 people attending with their labradors and one cocker spaniel. A good friend of ours brought her 2 working bred labradors and 1 show bred labrador and asked me if I would work her show bred lab. We wanted to do steadiness training so we did a walk up with dummies being thrown out in front of the dogs which were to be ignored as we walked on. We then walked up to the other end of the field, turned the dogs back to face the dummies and then sent each individual dog to pick a designated dummy and not to swap or pick two dummies up. We also concentrated on tidy heel work, directional work and delivery to hand and must say all dogs are coming along just fine.
Now for the show bred lab which I ran - must say a very good bitch. Very keen and eager to please, watched and marked very well, was very steady throughout the entire session, retrieved very well to hand, was on the stop whistle, recall whistle and did her directional work perfectly. This bitch is also nicely built - not your big hefty show lab, she was of the perfect size and carrying no fat or blubber which allowed her to move freely and with style. Mmmm - very nice indeed.
A good training session all round and its very rewarding to see all the young dogs improving each week. Looking forward to the next one.

Wednesday Training Group

We had a good training session on Wednesday evening with the beginners group. All dogs are coming on really well and everyone seems
to be enjoying it.

and who is the calmest,most intelligentist chocolate lab I have ever

We'd only walked from the car to the field and yes you've guessed it -

he was totally exhausted.

Have been out training with young Hazel today (Sire- FTCH Drakeshead Indiana, Dam - Eva Desire who is out of FTCH Willowyck Ruff and FTW Zelous Zeta.)
I have done some very basic stuff with her, heel work on and off the lead, stop and recall whistle, sit and stay, and retrieves which she sits in front of me and proudly delivers.
Hazel is one of those dogs (bitches)that when given free time to go and exercise and play - she doesn't want to, she'd rather be walking by your side looking up at you - basically saying - 'come on lets get down to some work'. She has got a very mature 'thinking' mind, and for her young age is rock steady. She has never been one of those giddy pups - even when we brought her home at 8 weeks she calmly settled in without any fuss, never barked , never cried - she really is one 'cool' bitch.
Over the last month or so I have introduced her into our training groups, and onto fresh ground, where theres been new people with their dogs and where there's been more noise, different scents and different scenarios going off. Everyone has commented how calm and focused she is - she really has done me proud.
I am hoping that because of her qualities, she will enjoy going to a couple of working tests, and I am hoping to introduce her to the shoot this year, just to walk her round and generally get the atmosphere of the day.
I have high hopes for our Hazel.

The last couple of weeks.

Despite been ill for the last couple of weeks- me with the flu and Ian with the 'man flu' - we have been quite busy in and out with the dogs, up and down the country to several working tests. We went over to Preston to a novice working test where I worked Jet - and what a total disaster it was. She decided it was a good idea to play stupid and refused to jump over a small fence into a rabbit pen - no amount of commands or encouragement would persuade her to jump over this small obsticle and retrieve the dummy from within the pen. Thats it - me out for the rest of the day. I would n't mind but she jumps these fences as a matter of routine every day as a bit of fun - and has been doing so for the last couple of years - so god knows what got into her head and why she wouldn't jump. Silly b---er.
Our next test was in South Cave with the Three Ridings Club - must say a very nice and friendly club - Ian running Jet in another novice. Well, well, well, what can I say about this one. Jet worked like a little diamond all day, not putting a foot wrong and gaining full marks on every test. Then disaster struck. On the last test of the day which was a double retrieve - a seen over a hedge in front and a blind behind - Ian messed up (putting it nicely). He was too busy watching the blind and totally mismarked the seen. He sent Jet over to the seen dummy which was to be picked first and started working her on the wrong side of the hedge. She attempted to go to the hedge on several occasions as she must have got wind of the dummy on the other side. Every time she did - Ian stopped her and brought her away from the hedge and worked her in front. Bhhhaaaa - thats no good - and as a result got her eliminated. Well done Ian - you should have gone to Spec Savers. So instead of coming home with an award - he got her totally disqualified. Lets just say - the air was rather blue. Mmmmmm.

Our next test was at Carton Towers - and again a novice with Jet. What a day that was too. Again Jet worked well, until a Judge sent Ian/ Jet to the wrong area to pick a blind - that wasn't there? Obviously Jet didn't do well on this one as it took her some time to be re- directed onto the dummy which was actually in a totally different area. Never mind though - we thoroughly enjoyed the day and enjoyed everyones company.

We are looking forward to our next test in a couple of weeks at Southport. Lets see how that day turns out? Hopefully we'll be feeling alot better by then as well.

Yorkshire Golden Retriever Test - Novice / Open - 23rd March 2011.

We attended the Yorkshire Golden Retriever Club Novice/Open Test held at Timble Ings, nr Harrogate. The judges on the day was Mr M Newsam, Mrs M Watmore and Mrs M Pearce, and the chief steward was Mr M Greenwood.
The novice tests in the morning was a double mark - with the designated dummy to be picked first, then a seen with a blind placed off to the right - the seen to be picked first. The third test was a seen then a blind placed in the same area. In the afternoon there was a walk up. Jet completed all of the tests with ease and I didn't have to use the whistle or give a command all day and she only dropped one point all day. She proudly gained 2nd place.
The open tests in the afternoon ran on the same lines but with all of the tests done at long distances. Boss completed test 2 quite well, test 1 also completed but with a bit of handling, and then test 3 - total handler error as I mismarked the retrieves so sent Boss to hold the wrong area. Thats the end of me and Boss for today but will look forward to the next one.

The Kelly Memorial Inter Counties Gundog Working Test

On the 17th April 2011 Boss run for the Barton & Humber Gundog

Club - in the Kelly Memorial Inter Counties Gundog Working Test

which was held at Lyndon, Rutland. The day was very well organised

and professionally run with 6 very well thought out tests which

challenged the dogs and handlers. At the end of the day we proudly

gained 3rd place out of an entry of 12 teams (39 dogs in total).

This test consisted of three blind retrieves - one for each dog. The first retrieve was to the right of the judge and John Day and which was placed in cover, John Days dog Middlegate Winter of Humbershot picked the dummy cleanly. The second retrieve was in front but to the right and placed near a white barrel - this dummy to be picked by David Brown and his dog Hamford Wig and again the dummy was picked cleanly. The third dummy was placed diagonally to the left and placed on top of a mound - this retrieve to be picked by Boss which picked the dummy cleanly.

This test was a seen thrown into the rape crop just below the brow of the hill.

This test consisted of a seen thrown to the left of the trees which was to be picked by Middlegate Winter of Humbershot, then a blind was placed under the middle tree which was to be picked by Hamford Wig and the third dummy which was also a blind was placed under the tree on the right - and to be picked by Boss.

This test was a walk up with a distraction thrown out in front and a blind dummy placed in the far field in the photo and which was in cover. The blind dummy to be picked from our left and the seen to be ignored.

We went out training today onto some land which enabled us to range the young dogs out and increase their distances on their retrieves. The majority of the retrieves were blinds placed in rough cover and long grasses or tightly placed under the foot of walls making the dogs get their heads down and use their noses.
TEST 1 - A blind dummy placed in long reedy grass (which you can see behind Elder in the photo). We walked further up the field to a distance of around 200 yards then straight lined him to the dummy which was placed well into the the reeds and tucked right under the wall. He did extremely well with his straight lining, winded the dummy as he approached the area and then jumped straight into the reeds, hunted round a bit and then picked the dummy.

All the dogs today performed well - especially the younger ones. We are really pleased with their progress over the last month or so and are thoroughly looking forward to working with them on a shoot day or at working tests.

URC Lincs area charity Novice/Open test

We attended the URC Lincs area charity Novice/Open test held at Raithby, Spilsby - in aid of the British Heart Foundation - in memory of Jim Cochrane, Brian Capps and Ken Naylor. The tests on the day was well set out - 5 tests in all which consisted of seens, blinds, double marks, water tests and walk ups. There was a good turn out of handlers and dogs (around 40+), and friends and family came to watch and take part in the days other activities such as raffles, auction, barbeque and buffet. There was also a professional photographer taking good quality action shots of all the dogs during the water test.

All in all a good day was had by all with everything running smoothly - and I even managed to gain a COM (5th place) with Jet.

RUMLEDYKES OAKLAND OF PENIGLEN.

Meet Rumledykes Oakland of Peniglen - his first appearance - kennel name Elder. A beautiful , well built, big strong happy chappy who loves to work and loves to please. He is 17 months old and for the past year has been going through his training which he has sailed through - taking everything on board and has enjoyed every minute of it. He has been an absolute pleasure to train and a real character within the kennels.
We are to introduce Elder to working tests this year as we are very happy with his progress - and towards the end of the year when the shooting season starts he will be slowly introduced to a couple of drives on the shoot. We are looking forward to a future with Elder.

We went up onto some land today to train in rough cover and to range the dogs out on long retrieves - using ditches, heather, long grasses and reeds. We started on a couple of simple retrieves - using the paths - but ranging the dogs out for blinds placed around 100 yards back. This was just a gentle 'warm up'.
We then worked the dogs down into a old quarry area - throwing a seen that landed into a wooded area - the dogs having to go down the quarry side - to retrieve the dummy from the wood. A blind was then placed roughly in the same area and the dogs sent back for the blind.

Another test we did was to place two blinds out - one to the right in heather - and one to the left that was in long grasses at a distance of around 200 yards. This test was to send the dogs out over rough land for the dummy on the right first - over a ditch and into the heather and get the dogs to hunt the area - then send the dogs back out for the blind dummy that was to the left in long grasses. This dummy/retrieve was a little harder as the dummy was placed right next to the waters edge - and the dogs had to hunt the area without going into the water.

We went out training with friends yesterday to get our dogs ready and prepared for the working tests throughout the summer. We had a good session, mainly focusing on blind retrieves, memories, and distance work. The land we used had been sprayed with manure so the scents on the dummies were masked, making the dogs get their noses down and hunt. We set up a test where we dug little holes in the ground (just big enough to fit a tennis ball in) then dropped the ball inside and covered it back up with a slight covering of grass. We set the dogs off from a distance of around 100mtrs - the aim of the test was to hold the dogs tightly in that area and give them the loss command. All dogs did well - thankfully.

Tuesday 2nd of March 2011

We went out training today in an area with dence woodland, streams, valleys and ponds, and focused on retrieves that was in heavy cover - enaballing the dogs to use their natural hunting skills.

To start off with we threw a dummy into cover and then walked away round the the boundary of the wood - using the path system. The test was to range the dogs out diagonally through the dence woodland - over chopped logs, through brambles and over ditches, for the memory retrieve. The dogs were to use the woodland both on the way out and on the way back in - and not retrace our steps on the paths. The distance covered on this test was around 230 yards. All 4 dogs did well on this test and all 4 did go through the woods and not on the paths.

The next test we did was to throw a dummy down a ravine and across onto the other side - over a stream. We then walked away - again using the winding path system - to a distance of around 250 yards.

The test was to straight line the dogs through the heavy wooded area, down into the ravine, over the stream and up the other side of the ravine to retrieve the dummy. The dogs had to get their noses down and hunt the area well, as the ground was littered with chopped logs, brambles, rocks and holes and was also covered in pheasant and rabbit scents from nearby pens and burrows. For the majority of this test the dogs were out of view so were obviously left to get on with the job. Again all the dogs completed the test, and all came back proudly carrying the dummies which they delivered to hand.

We continued with a couple of other tests - then called it a day, as we were ready for our fish and chips and a nice hot cuppa. A good day was had by all.

Pete's two young dogs did exeptionally well today, as this was fresh land for them and which had plenty of distractions so they could quite easily have been tempted away from the retrieves.

I took one of the young dogs out today to go through the basics that he has already done , but also introduced some new commands as well. I always like to start the training session off lightly with a few simple commands like the recall and stop whistle, then move onto directional work using dummies, straight lining, and today I have started to increase the distance with the retrieves. One of the tests that I introduced today was to throw a dummy to the left, and another dummy to the right - landing around 30/40 yards away. Then I turned and walked back another 20 yards - so the dog had to mark well and remember where the dummies were. I first sent him for the left dummy which he went straight out for, picked it neatly and delivered it to hand. I then sent him for the right one - which again he had marked well - picked it and delivered it. I repeated this test again - increasing the distance of the dummies and increasing the distance that I walked back. Another test that I tried today was to throw a dummy out, sent the dog - and then stopped him on the whistle as close to the dummy as possible - then to recall him without him picking the dummy. This test is to learn the dog to be steady, patient and that he cannot have every retrieve that falls. He was actually stood right over the dummy - looking down on it, but when I recalled him he came straight back to me without touching the dummy. I was very pleased with him today as he took every command and every test in his stride and for a young dog is proving to be quite an intelligent, steady and thoughtful little chap. I am hoping to introduce him to a working test at some stage this year - we'll have to wait and see.

Had A great Day Training With Our Good Friend Pete From Woodpath Gundogs

We had a fantastic day today when our good friend - Pete came up from Norfolk to spend a days training with us. We started the training session off at about 11ish, up on some local farm land. We firstly excersised the dogs - letting them blow off a bit of steam then moved onto the basics of training. We started by assessing the young ones, seeing what we needed to concentrate on, and then moved on to a few simple excercises. We also introduced cold game to some of the young ones today, and each dog did exeptionally well. We were promoting steadiness with the more experienced adult dogs, they were stood watching whilst all the training was going on - and the birds were been thrown.

After a short break for dinner, we swapped the dogs over and then went back out to do some simple seen retrieves with the cold game, a bit of straight lining, a bit of whistle work, and delivery. Again everything went smoothly, and as the light started to fade - we packed up and came home for a nice cup of hot tea.

It was very nice to see Pete as we hadn't seen him for a couple of months, but it was even more rewarding to see his young dogs working so well.

He has done remarkably well in training his young ones over the past few months - the dogs have improved dramatically since we last saw them. They were all very well behaved, very quiet and steady workers, and they put alot of thought into their work. It was a pleasure to watch them.

Pete set off from his home in Norfork about 6ish am and didnt return - and get home till about 10ish at night - so he had an extremely long day. He proberbly won't be doing a repeat of the journey for a good few months yet!

Took 4 of the dogs out again today to do steadiness training and to brush up and refresh on some basic commands. We did stop whistle, directional work, steadiness training for the younger dogs whilst the older dogs worked round them, and marking. One of the tests was to sit three of the dogs in a line - with each dog placed about 10 yards from each other - with the youngest dog being in the middle. The fourth dog then to be sent straight past and through the line of dogs - including the young one, to retrieve a thrown dummy. The object of the test being to promote steadiness of the dogs that were sat without an handler, whilst other dogs ran through them to retrieve, and whilst dummies were being thrown over their heads, and to the left and right of them.

Tracey Out Training With Some of The Dogs

I took 4 of the dogs out today - Boss, Glen, Jet and Dora to do some distance and jumping retrieves with cold game. The light wasn't particularly good, with mist and drizzle so I kept the training session short and sweet - but with good quality retrieves.
I placed 4 pheasants over a wall at around 250 yards away as blinds - the dogs having to go through a large boggy area - over a broken wall, then over a field and then over a solid stone wall, then hunt the ground for the pheasants.
All the dogs took it in turn, and all completed this test with relative ease, and delivered well to hand. I repeated this test again but put the game/retrieves further back at a longer distance, so that the dogs would have to ignore all the previous scents on the ground, and get their noses down and hunt the ground - using the slight breeze in the air. Again all dogs completed the test well.
Because of the poor lighting conditions, I decided to call it a day after that, so took the dogs home to dry them off and give them there tea and then put them away with a bone and the heat lamps on with plenty of vet bed to lie on.

We introduced Jet to a few working tests this summer - the first of which was on the 1st May and was held by the Golden Retriever Club at Addingham Moorside, Nr ilkley, North Yorkshire.

There was an entry of 20 dogs in total on the day. After running well in the morning - Jet made the cut at dinner and was in the walk-up with 8 other dogs for the afternoons tests - which she completed with ease so she was then in the run-off for first place. Jet proudly gained 2nd place but we was very pleased with this result, as this was only her first ever working test that she had been entered into.

On 2nd May we entered Jet into another Novice Working Test held by the Pennine Training Area of the Northern Golden Retriever Association at Adlington, Nr Chorley, Lancashire.

There were 35 dogs in total on the day. Jet gained a Certificate of Merit and again we were very pleased with this result as this is only the 3rd Working Test that she has been entered into.

On 8th May we went along to a training and Informal match day held by the URC Linc's Area at Atterby, North of Lincoln. Boss enjoyed the Open training session in the morning which was a walk-up and water retrieving, and then Jet was entered into the Novice Informal Match in the afternoon. She gained 55 points out of the maximum of 60 points which placed her in the run-off for second place - which she won.

On 13th June we entered Jet in a Novice Working Test held by the Pennine Training Area of the Northern Golden Retriever Association at the Hoyles Farm, Strines, Nr Sheffield. There was an entry of 29 dogs in total, Jet proudly gained 3rd place. There was 2 tests in the morning ,1 was a straight marked retrieve at around 200 yards, the 2nd test was a mark and a blind, you had to retrieve the blind first. Then we had a break for lunch, and in the afternoon there was 3 more tests, first a water test ,then a walk-up with a retrieve front and back,and the last test was a blind down a hill side.

All in all a very good day which was run extremely well, with good tests to match. I think everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Peniglen Mackintosh (Glen) First Day Picking-up.

Glen has been introduced to the shooting field at the start of this season. On his first day when we arrived at the shoot in the morning I let Boss - Jet & Glen out of the car sat them at the side of me for about 20 minutes to let them relax before their first day picking-up this season. A few of the guns came over to admire them - and remarked how well behaved they were being.
We all had a good chat catching up with friends which we hadn't seen since the end of last season whilst having a nice bacon sandwich and a little sip of port. We then decided to make a start so I put Glen back in the car for the first few drives with the windows in the car lowered so he could hear all the guns going off, then in the afternoon I got him out for a couple of drives. I wouldnt let him pick a bird until his second drive and instead focused on steadiness. He remained calm and totally focused on the job in hand and marked every bird well. I then let him pick a simple retrieve at the end of the drive which he completed with ease, delivering well to hand. At that - it was the end of our day so I was very pleased with him as he remained calm throughout which hopefully is a good sign for future days out and possible working test days.

Boss has had a good run in working tests this summer. On the 7th March he was entered into a test held by the URC (Lincolnshire Area) where there was an entry of 42 dogs, Boss made the cut at dinner with 73 points out of 80 - joint top on points.There was then a walk-up which he completed with ease which then made it down to the run-off. Boss gained 1st place which made him a Novice Working Test Winner.

Then on the 10th April 2010, we took Boss along to a Training and Informal Match Day also held by the URC Lincs Area. We thoroughly enjoyed the day - both the training in the morning - and then onto the match in the afternoon. We entered Boss into the Open Informal Match, which he proudly gained second place only dropping 4.1/2 points out of 80.

Later that month on the 24th April 2010, Boss was entered into an Open Test held by the Yorkshire Golden Retriever Club at Timble Ings, Timble, Nr Harrogate, North Yorkshire. There was 40 Open dogs in total. Boss proudly gained 2nd Place with 52 points out of 60.

On 30th May 2010 we decided to enter Boss into an Intermediate Cold Game Test held by the URC North Midlands Area at Carlton Towers, North Yorkshire. There was an entry of 24 dogs,in the morning there was 3 seen marked retrieves, and in the afternoon there were 3 blind retrieves which boss completed, they then made the cut followed by a walk-up with 2 more retrieves which boss completed with ease. Boss proudly gained 1st place with 155 points out of 160.

On the 21st August 2010 Boss gained 1st place in a Open Cold Game Test held by Yorkshire Golden Retriever Club. There was an entry of 24 dogs. I think the best way to discribe Boss's performance on the day is by saying that he was - flying on top form. A very proud moment indeed.

Another proud moment this year was when I was asked by two gundog clubs to be first reserve at Chatsworth country game fair, to be on standby should they have needed me for the gundog events.
